Profile of IBARAKI

Location

Ibaraki Prefecture is located in the northern part of the Kantō region, which roughly occupies the central area of the Japan archipelago. The distance of the prefecture to the nation's capital, Tōkyō, ranges from 30 to 150 km (100 km from Mito, the prefectural capital), while the distance from Narita Airport, Japan's international gateway, to Tsukuba Science City is 40 km.

Area

The area is 6,093 km², making Ibaraki Prefecture the 24th largest in the country. Because much of Ibaraki is flat land, 64 percent of the area (3,913 km²) is suitable for residence.

Population

The population of Ibaraki Prefecture was a mere 2 million in 1947. Since 1966, however, it has enjoyed a constant increase. With a population of about 2.99 million in 2004, Ibaraki now ranks a prefectural 11th in population, out of a national population of 127 million.
