Results of Radioactive Substance Monitoring in Public Bodies of Water

Results of Radioactive Substance Monitoring in Public Bodies of Water in Ibaraki Prefecture
(Released by Ministry of Environment)

Based on the Collective Monitoring Plan decided on by the Monitoring Committee, the Ministry of the Environment is continuously monitoring for radioactive substances in water environments (public bodies of water (rivers, lakes, reservoirs, coasts) etc).

We have collated the results from monitoring of radioactive substances in public bodies of water in Ibaraki Prefecture for samples from 5/29 to 7/11, and are announcing them below.

Testing Overview

(1) Testing Sites: 70 environmental reference points within Ibaraki Prefecture's public bodies of water (Rivers: 53 sites; Lakes/Reservoirs: 12 sites; Coasts: 5 sites)

(2) Testing Details: - Measurements of the radiation concentration within water or sediment (radioactive cesium (Ce-134, Ce-137))

- Measurements of the radiation concentration in the soil or air of the surrounding environment at the sites where water or sediment were sampled (such as river bed, etc)

Results Overview (* indicates February's results)

Water:

No cesium was detected at any of the sites (lowest detectable value = 1Bq/L)

<For Reference>

The index concerning consumption restrictions for food and drink from the "Disaster Counter-Measures for Nuclear Energy Facilities, etc (Nuclear Energy Safety Committee)" (drinking water):
Radioactive Cesium (Ce-134, Ce-137) = 10Bq/kg

Sediment:

(lowest detectable value = 10Bq/kg (dehydrated sludge))

Radioactive Cesium:

(rivers)

Cesium 134 = from Not detected to 1,900Bq/kg (dehydrated sludge)

*Cesium 134 = from Not detected to 2,400Bq/kg (dehydrated sludge)

*Cesium 137 = from Not detected to 3,400Bq/kg (dehydrated sludge)

(lakes/reservoirs)

Cesium 134 = from 41 to 420Bq/kg (dehydrated sludge)

*Cesium 137 = from 91 to 770Bq/kg (dehydrated sludge)

(coasts)

Cesium 134 = from Not detected to 25Bq/kg (dehydrated sludge)

Cesium 137 = from Not detected to 39Bq/kg (dehydrated sludge)

*Cesium 134 = from Not detected to 100Bq/kg (dehydrated sludge)

*Cesium 137 = from 11 to 130Bq/kg (dehydrated sludge)

Surrounding Environment:

(lowest detectable value = 10Bq/kg (dehydrated sludge))
