Radiation Levels in Ibaraki Prefecture Youth Education Facilities, etc

Radiation Levels in Ibaraki Prefecture Youth Education Facilities, Recreational Parks, etc (Measurement Results, 7th Survey)

The Prefectural Education Committee conducted the following measurements on airborne radiation levels in prefectural youth education facilities, recreational parks, and other such institutions.

The measurement results for all of the facilities are below the 1micro-sievert per hour at 50cm-1m above ground target stipulated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) for school grounds and gardens.

Targeted Facilities (17)

5 youth education facilties, 5 museums, 4 recreational parks, 3 continuing education centers.

Measurement Dates

  • 1st Survey: June 8th (Wed.), 10th (Fri.), 22nd (Wed.), and 23rd (Thurs.), 2011
  • 2nd Survey: August 3rd (Wed.) and 4th (Thurs.), 2011
  • 3rd Survey: September 6th (Tues.) and 7th (Wed.), 2011
  • 4th Survey: November 28th to 30th
  • 5th Survey: February 28th to March 8th
  • 6th Survey: April 23rd to 26th
  • 7th Survey: July 3rd to 13th

Measurement Device

NaI Scintillation Survey Meter (Aloka Co.,Ltd)

Measurement Locations and Methods

  1. 5 locations were measured in the main outdoor facility of each facility, and the average was calculated (same for all surveys)
Measurements were amended to accomodate those in MEXT's 'Regarding Measurements of Airborne Radiation in School Grounds and Gardens Conducted by MEXT' (50cm above ground, or 1m aboveground (the rifle shooting range and educational training center))
  2. Locations where high radiation levels are predicted, such as eavestroughs and gutters (new for the 3rd survey)
Measurements were amended to accomodate the methods in MEXT's 'Instructions on Measurements of Radiation in Schools' in order to uncover locations with a comparatively high level (1-50cm above ground, or 1m above ground)
