The Museum of Modern Art (Mito)

A small museum situated at a picturesque spot along the three-kilometer perimeter of Lake Senba. World-class artworks are shown in the many exhibits held each year, such as the sculptures of Auguste Rodin and the paintings of Renoir and Taikan Yokoyama.

Transportation

By train:

65 minutes by Jōban Line Super Hitachi from JR Ueno station. From the JR Mito station south exit, it takes 15 minutes on foot, or you can take a bus from the No. 8 bus stop at Mito station north exit and get off at the Bunka Center entrance.

By car:

20 minutes from Mito interchange on the Jōban Expressway (if you use Senba-kōen Bunka Center mae parking, the parking fee is refunded at the reception desk, so please show your parking receipt) *Handicapped parking is also available, and located on the east side of the Museum.

By express bus:

110 minutes from the Tōkyō station Yaesu south exit bus terminal. Get off at the JR Mito station north exit.

  • Admission fees may vary with exhibitions.
  • An additional charge is required for entry to the museum during special exhibitions.

Open

  • From 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (No entry after 4:30 p.m.)

Days closed

  • Every Monday
  • (Except when Monday is a national holiday, in which case the museum is closed the following Tuesday)
  • From Dec. 29th to Jan. 1st

Special discounted rates

  • Senior citizens 70 and over (show insurance card)
  • School trips with teachers (must apply for discounted rates)
  • Foreign exchange students in Ibaraki (must apply for discounted rates)
  • Welfare groups of children and their guardians (must apply for discounted rates)
  • Handicapped people and those accompanying them (must show ID card)
  • People who receive government welfare or public assistance (must show certificate)

Admission is free on

-Ibaraki Prefectural Day (November 13)
-Saturday for students aged 18 and under
(except during summer, winter and spring holidays)
-The Museum of Modern Art, Ibaraki Club members (show your member's card)
