How do I get to the airport?

On a map, Ibaraki does not look a long way away from Tōkyō or Chiba, but it really takes a very long time to get anywhere. Especially to the airports, Narita and Haneda. One of the best ways to get there is on the bus. Even though you have to worry a bit about traffic, it is a lot easier than lugging your cases up and down the stairs at train stations. It is also quite comparable in price to the train. For example, it is 3000 yen from Mito to Narita on the bus and it takes less than 2 hours. On the train it would almost 3 hours and cost 3,350 yen! I strongly recommend taking the bus.

But take note of the time table. The bus that starts in Hitachi for Haneda only leaves in the morning, so do not rely on it for an evening flight. I have made this mistake before. Also all buses to Narita and Haneda must be booked in advace.

If you live in Tsuchiura, Tsukuba, Hitachino-Ushiku, or Shin-Tōne, use Natts.

All other areas will need to go by train, directly to Narita or to a location where a bus stops. Use Hyperdia(external link) to check train times in English.
