Call the nearest NTT office for information. Dial 116 (there is no need to use your area code).

To purchase a phone or arrange for installation, go to any NTT office with some form of identification, such as your alien registration certificate or passport.

To transfer your telephone ownership, go to an NTT office with the new owner. The new owner (if a resident alien) must bring his or her alien registration certificate and passport and you (the previous owner) must bring a document certifying that your seal ('hanko') is registered.

Telephone charges

You are billed every month for telephone service and for direct-dial calls. There is a flat rate for telephone service. Direct-dial charges are calculated by distance and time.

Charges:

Within the area code10 yen every 3 minutes
Neighboring districts0 yen every 90 seconds
Outlying districtsThe greater the distance, the shorter the time you can talk for 10 yen

There are two methods of payment. One is to have your bill deducted automatically from your bank account. The other is to pay in cash with a 'money order' (furikaeyoshi) which you can get at a bank, post office or city hall and which will be mailed for you free of charge.

Whether you purchase or borrow a phone, you are responsible for paying the monthly telephone charge.
