World Culture Seminar

Carly Bode, International Affairs Division

The World Culture Seminar is a twice-annual 10 week seminar run by the Ibaraki International Association for speakers of English.

Topics in past years have included

  • Racism
  • Natural disasters
  • Safety in Japan
  • Living with disabilities
  • Contemporary Chinese history
  • Multiculturalism
  • Racial identity construction
  • The Scottish border
  • And many more!

The seminar is held twice a week at the International Association Office in Mito, on selected Thursdays at 1:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. Each session runs for two hours and includes a presentation by a guest speaker and group activities such as debates, discussions and games.

While the majority of participants are Japanese with high levels of English, foreigners are more than welcome to attend and join in on the discussions. Guest presenters with interests in "cultural" fields are also sought.

It is also possible to participate in the seminar online through the World Culture Seminar Forum. Weekly readings, copies of PowerPoint slides used, and videos of presentations are also available.

If you are interested in taking part in the seminar, as either a participant or a guest presenter, please call Aurélien at the International Association at 029-241-1611 for more details.
