Genzou Tanaka (田中 愿蔵 1844 –1864)

The Tengu Faction / A Young Devoted Fighter for the Emperor

Genzou turns to the Tengu Faction when a youth, before raising an army on Mount Tsukuba in 1864. Being a strong advocate of an overthrow of the shogunate, he later leads a detached force and fights numerous battles. Outnumbered by the enemy, he flees to Manahata, in Higashishirakawa District (now part of Fukushima Prefecture) but, fearing for his surroundings’ safety, he turns himself in. He is executed at the age of 21 in Hanawa.
