One of Japan's three famous gardens, Kairakuen is aptly renowned for its plum blossoms. Built in 1842 by Mito's ninth feudal lord, Nariaki Tokugawa, the garden is filled from late February through March with visitors who come to experience the brilliant color and fragrance of nearly 3,000 plum trees.
